Easter Weekend

Easter Weekend 2007. More track time than you can point a 400 at! This weekend was something truly amazing, in good and bad ways. First things first, I was up for three track days in the space of five days. For Easter Sunday I was booked into an advanced ride day at the AHG track (thanks to Ryan and Robin for buying me that), on Easter Monday I was doing level two of the Trakdayz course, and on the following Thursday I was doing a tuning session at AHG again.

Sunday: AHG
Things started out badly. It was raining, it was slippery, it was cold and generally miserable. Not exactly a perfect start, and the weather certainly didn't instil any confidence in me. I had left my helmet and gloves out on the bike assuming we'd only be having a brief meeting before heading out to the track. This meeting turned out to be an hour-long session. Meanwhile my gloves and helmet were well on the way to growing moss.

With damp gloves and lack of confidence, I jumped on the bike (along with everyone else that felt much the same) and proceeded to attempt to warm up the tyres and do some laps of the track.

Cutting a long story short, we did some slow speed manoeuvring, some emergency braking, cornering, weaving and general body positioning. From there we had free reign of the track (which had dried up eventually over the course of a few hours).

During this free time, I took the time to get my lines sorted and concentrated mainly on getting correct entry and exit speeds, rather than generally belting around the track. I didn't get out of third gear, and I didn't brake more than I needed to. Later in the session as I was starting to get into the swing of things, I came acropper when my foot slipped off the footpeg whilst I had my knee down going around a left hander. I guess it was lucky that my knee was down and it took the brunt of the fall, and my bike didnt have far to go to hit the ground.

I ended up with some scuffs on my leathers, a cracked screen with bent brace, scraped bar end, a scrape on the rear fairing (saved more so by the rear stand pickup bobbin), with no damage to the front fairing or the tank thanks to the oggy knob. Thanks to Amber for helping me start the bike up and Andrea for hosing my bike down from all the rocks and dirt after it slid into the sand.

After getting a little distraught and losing my confidence, Ryan convinced me to get back on the track by starting out doing some laps around the skid pan and making sure the bike felt okay and that no other damage was done.

Within the hour, I was back on the track doing what I love: riding. I chose not to hang around for the tuning session as I was already tired. I didn't want to make any more mistakes, and I didn't want to wear myself out for Monday.

Monday: Wanneroo Raceway
I was in level two for the Trakdayz course, and I was excited that I didn't have to be in the veggie group anymore. I could play with the bigger bikes now, ride with people with more track experience... or so I thought! Again, the day started out badly with some dude who will only be known as "Sete", rudely telling me "that space is taken, mate". I'll give you "mate" Sete. That truly pissed me off. Nowhere are there any spaces allocated, or named or numbered. Its first in best dressed, but being the stupid person that I am, I moved over and parked elsewhere. All his mates in the same group ended parking him in anyway. Sux2bU Sete.

The first two sessions of the day were a little shaky. Wanneroo is a big, fast sweeping track. Coming off a tight technical track into something like this, was scary. Not only that, but I'd forgotten how to ride it. Of course, having an incident the day before also didn't help, so I went slowly and consistently over the first few sessions. I was not however, impressed with the behaviour of certain members of my group overtaking me in the wrong places or chopping me up. In summary, they were riding like dicks. Not all of them, just a few of these "mates" that were pretty much racing each other.

Sete got a few warnings about his general bad attitude towards everyone else on the track, and he was even caught on video doing wrong, but still, he rode like a dick and I just got angrier and started losing more confidence. He was essentially ruining my day.

One of the instructors suggested that I drop down into group one, saying that I'd be faster than most of them on the track and that I'd have more free space to ride like I should have been doing as soon as I got on the track...

So I did. Into level one. Like being a complete n00b. I felt completely different. I knew Sete was not on the track at the same time as me, I knew that I would have some more space, and I knew I could have more fun. And I sure as hell did. It was like starting anew, I was confident, I was getting off the bike more, and I was having FUN! It only took up two-thirds of my day to get there!

^^^ Props to Matt and Dugy for their excellent photographs - you guys make me look fast when I was riding like a girl.

In all, it was a good day and I took many things away with me. That night Tash organised a PSB dinner at an Italian Restuarant. Most of the time was spent chatting and catching up with fellow members, scribbling in crayon on the table papers, throwing bits of chocolate egg and enjoying a good meal.

Thursday: AHG again
It was all on again at AHG, with a busted bike with bits of race tape all over the place holding the screen together and masking the scrape on the fairing. The session was held in reverse orientation which meant more right handers (spew!), but towards the end I was really enjoying the track - it was like learning it all over again. It was a great day for more track time, with the sun out and a slight breeze.

The Very Excellent Thursday Party

Again, its been a while since I blogged. A few things have happened: the R1 is legally mine, my new boss at work came for a visit from Sweden (although he only starts officially in June), Scott finally left for Canada (jeez I cried a lot), went for a spin with the boys and girls to York, Toodyay and Northam a few weekends ago.

I've been waiting for ages to go to Jono's Very Excellent Thursday Party - it was fancy dress...
Sean and I had previously made a visit to Adultshop to pick out a nice costume for me, a corrupt cop outfit called Ivana Bribe. Unfortunately me being as busy as I was this week, I only managed to get around to picking it up yesterday... none left. So French maid it was.

It ended up being a really good night, albeit a shortened one. Cheers to Sean for letting me crash the night, and to Simon, Annie and Glen for keeping me entertained, particularly the drive home and the "juicy burgers".

Apples and Oranges

I'm in Orange, NSW this week for work and actually, it's almost time I head off site and drive over to the airport. I can fit a quick blog in I guess...

I've been at the Cadia mine working underground checking out some automated drilling, working 12+ hour days, drinking lots of Bacardi and Cola, eating creamy garlic prawns and beer battered fries and driving a Landcruiser ute at Mach 10. I can't say its all been bad. I've enjoyed the time on site, and I've learnt a lot. It's just been hard work doing it all yourself, being alone for a week, especially with so much going on back home in Perth.

Cadia mine is set in a nice part of the countryside

Flying out of Perth was pretty good, I managed to down a mini bottle of red wine at record pace which took the edge off just nicely. The rest of the way I was drifting it and out of sleep, which is something I usually can't do; sleep on a plane. Met up with a workmate in Sydney who got me into the Qantas Club where I drank Bluetounge Lager from the Hunter Valley. What a top beer, went down so well... a few beers later I pushed down a Bacardi and Cola and it was almost time to board my connecting flight to Orange. Walking up to the boarding gate, my name was called to make the gate "as your plane is awaiting you for immediate departure". Woops. I was famous for 30 seconds. Got frowned upon though. I wonder if I actually looked pissed...

Once in Orange, it was a matter of checking in and hitting the restaurant, I was starving. And I was thirsty again. I do believe the beverage cost on the Monday night was quite substantial!

I'm flying back to Perth this afternoon, what's another 6 hours on a plane? Hopefully I'll make it back and not be completely exhausted for the FNR (Friday night ride). I've been missing my bikes too, and my family and friends. Jeez, I hate travelling sometimes. Looking forward to being home.

On the way to the Orange airport, I went past this little gem...

Now With Extra MAYO!

Yes, you can never have too much of a good thing, just like extra mayo on a continental roll. With four meats, cheese, semi-dried tomatoes and artichoke hearts on a crispy bread roll - you can't go wrong.

So I went out yesterday and picked up a 2003 Yamaha R1 from my mate Vickers (cheers bro) with all the fruit and heaps of shit on the side.

Here's the deal. A week and a half ago, I was out to lunch with some old uni mates, namely Vickers and Gunns. We had dodgy Chinese food at the "usual" (Singapore Hawkers) and Vickers is telling me that it's all official, he's got a one-way ticket to Canada (-eh) and that he needs to sell the bike. So I'm like, "oh yeh, the R1, how's that going?". So he explains that he's taken it to a dealer to get an offer and that he doesn't really have time to sell it properly as he's off in a couple of weeks.

As he's telling me about the bike I'm thinking "that's a fucken sweet bike, kept in great nick, low kays and a crazy price"... After lunch, standing in the carpark I tell Vickers, "I need to make some calls". Two days later I was at the bank! Another nine days later its in my driveway. Look see...

So the question I've been getting asked is, "what are you doing with the 400?". The answer is obvious. I'm keeping it :) Two bikes are better than one.

Labour Day Long Weekend - Cervantes

Last weekend, a few of us headed out to Cervantes for a short road trip, much like the Australia Day Weekender to Dunsborough.

We met up at the local petrol station and headed North via Old Yanchep Road, where we were able to blow some cobwebs out of our bikes; taking extra care on the last right hander. Heading further North, we travelled along some excellent, quiet roads which were open and very flat.

We stayed for a few days, rode up through Jurien Bay, Green Head and to Leeman. There was thought about heading out to Dongara, but noone could really be assed in the extreme heat. Thank god for the Camelbak, if not for that cool fresh water, I would have been cooking with gas in my leathers.

We stopped into the Cervantes Tavern to eat most days; with fresh fish, crays, hot chips, cold beer and Fox Sports. The rest of our time on the bike was chilling in the courtyard of the backpackers ripping into Bacardi and Cola, slagging on the random Canadian (-eh) dude that apparently worked there.

Another successful (but more low key) trip away. Thanks to all that came along and made it a great weekend. So, when's the next one Seandre?

EOM Drags - February Edition

Ok, so I got the fever for dragging again. The weather was dirt. It was cloudy, winding and was threatening to piss down for the best part of the day. But, I went anyway.

I organised the end-of-month drags on the 28th of February for people to come down and have a go. Unfortunately with the weather, and EOI of about 20 people became a turnout of about 8. Which was no drama, as there were almost no cars present, so I ended up with 13 passes down the quarter mile.

I heart teh dragz

Luckily for me, I ran many more low 13 second passes, and ran another personal best:
12.840 seconds

Out of ALL the pages they could have fed through the printer incorrectly... it HAD to be my pb.
Spewin'

It turned out to be a great night, the track was prepped, it was cool and a small turnout. Due to the weather being shoddy there was also a minimal appearance of spectators; meaning I was finally game enough to try doing a burnout!

Do these leathers make my bum look big?
Do a fkn burnout!

I'll have to buy the one of me backing it into the water for the novelty!
