Ride to Work Day, 2007

So did you end up riding to work today?

The weather in Perth today was supreme, the sunrise magnificent, and I was so knackered at work today that I knocked off early and enjoyed a ride home in less-than-normal traffic. Sometimes, everything just works.

I saw about 8 bikes this morning on the way to work, and about 3 on the way back. Usually its just the one person on Walter Road in the morning. I took the 400 out as well, first time in about two weeks, and she feels niiiiiiice. Need to ride her around a little bit more as I'm sure the R1 has had a little bit too much attention recently.

I wonder if there will be a press release anywhere about today...?

By the River

My afternoon was spent riding around Perth and surrounds. Robin, Nath and I rode up into the hills towards Mundaring where we stopped off at the pub for a beer, some lemonade and a spit roast lamb roll. Coming back we had a blat back down towards the city where a guy on a yellow Ducati was following me and I was leaving him behind around the corners. I bet that when he got on his bike about the same time we did, he was thinking "Ponytail on an R1? She can't ride..." Hehe. Sux to be you buddy, I left you and your yellow Duke for dead :P

After the ride I stopped home to put some warmer clothes on for the evening. Whilst riding back from my place, I noticed that the city just had a "look" about it so I pulled over to grab a few photos whilst there was still some daylight.

Something about that last photo that makes ^^^ that R1 look mega-evil. It looks mean during the day and even more so at night, but this photo actually managed to capture it.

The Evolution is Complete!

Black Friday

Dates like "Friday the thirteenth" tend to make some people freak out. Said to be one of the unluckiest days of the calendar year, I found it to be very lucky.

I had a half hour sleep in, rode to my Chiropractic appointment, then headed down to Jandakot Airport to the Royal Aero Club of WA for a flight in a Tigermoth.

Usually about $190 for a half hour flight, I got a mates-rates deal with the one of the gentlemen I met at the Engineering visit to the RAAF Pearce airbase, Paul Falconer-West.

Paul and I got up to the Tigermoth and I got strapped in and rugged up (note the ski goggles in the photo) whilst we waited for an instructor to come out and bump start the old girl. Once started, we headed to the skirt of the tarmac for a four-minute startup sequence. Not long after we got the all clear from the control tower and we were ready for take off.

A few minutes passed and we were at altitude. At this point Paul let me grab the controls and let me steer; "20 degrees left, keep your nose up". I can't believe I got to fly a 1940's Tigermoth for about 15 minutes! It was a truly awesome experience.

Carnegies

Went out to Carnegies on Wednesday night to help take some photos for my mate Nic who was reviewing the place. Surprisingly, Carnegies *aka Carnage* goes off on Wednesdays!

Out of the 80 or so photos I took, only three came out decent...

Nic is reviewing for CLUBANTIX and his writeup for Carnegies should be up soon. Props to Dugy from Sunburnt Photography for his input too!

Not since the year 2000 have The Smashing Pumpkins released an album. Machina, The Machines of God was their last, making the top 100 ARIA Chart Albums of 2000 and also went Gold in Australia with 35,000 units of Machina sold. Machina II, The Friends and Enemies of Modern Music was an independent internet-based release and didn't help to quell ill feelings for the band's breakup.

Now, on July 10th, 2007 comes the US-release of Zeitgeist; the sixth official album from my favourite band of all time, The Smashing Pumpkins.

I acquired the album about a week ago and pre-ordered a limited edition CD and book as well. I have had this album on in the car and on my iPod for days, playing track after track. It's like the Pumpkins never really had a break, the music is still just as brilliant and shimmery.

I hear the squeal of high pitch guitars over the crunchy riffs and beating bass, I hear Billy Corgan belting out the anger like he was 20-something again. That unforgettable whiney voice... with well articulated words, takes me back to Mellon Collie days when rock was the scene.

Oh my, they're back rockin' up the big stuff like they used to, without being unfriendly to radio. Mainstream won't be too impressed, but the alternative stations will be digging it.

Doomsday Clock - an excellent opener track with a belter of a beat, simple guitars and raw Billy vocals.

7 Shades of Black - a more vocally oriented track, with hidden guitar support. Very old school Pumpkins style, they sound like it was recorded it Billy's garage. I rate this track.

Bleeding the Orchid - a darker choral work, Billy's voice is heavy and sad and layered. Excellent follow on from the preceding rockers.

That's the Way (My Love Is) - a lighter effort but guitars are still thick. It's a love song! But works up to Tarantula nicely.

Tarantula - guitar harmonics and reverse vox make this an obvious radio winner. Not so typical of the traditional Pumpkins vibe, but they pull it off. I wouldn't have made this the first single off the album, but it rocks and it's gotten people's attention.

Starz - my favourite song on the album. Classic Pumpkin backbeat, accented with "we are, we are starz" in a way that only Billy could do. Lots of great bridge arrangements, guitars quietly fighting in the background, drums crescendo, voice gets louder, first guitar comes in... it peaks and again, "we are, we are starz". A short but wonderful drum solo also in this track and then more Pumpkins energy. Not a long track, but I sincerely hope this becomes the second single. It will do better than Tarantula.

United States - the epic. It can't be a true Pumpkins album without the epic. Previous epic tracks include Rhinoceros (Gish), Silverfuck (Siamese Dream), Porcelina of the Vast Oceans (Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness), For Martha (Adore) and Glass and the Ghost Children (Machina, The Machines of God). This almost 10-minute effort highlights the unique sound that the Smashing Pumpkins produce. Instrumental solos with lots of effects and changes in tone and mood. The title of the track? Don't really get it. Then again, see previous "epic" titles...

Neverlost - a softie. An easy to listen to track that makes you tap your feet. Simple in sound, gentle in delivery. A good transition from United States.

Bring the Light - the one that's hard to explain. It's a track that does a little bit of everything. I did notice that "light, bring the light" gets repeated a lot. I found this a little frustrating, but still a good track. It's upbeat and has a good (but short) guitar solo.

(Come On) Let's Go! - another radio-ready track. A little more melodious compared to the other heavier rock tracks on the album. Can't complain about it, but not my favourite.

For God and Country - the political statement. This song has more focus on lyrics, but still consists of an interesting mix of heavy beats, light vocals and electronic sounds and effects. Some piano in this track, something that struck me, seeing as Machina had a LOT of piano. The track is a little long winded, but nice.

Pomp and Circumstances - the finale. The "laa-laa" lullabye feel of this track with the subtle background gong makes this a great finale. Guitars roar over the top and it brings back the Adore feel (For Martha) adding gentle closure to this fantastic album. This track is like a big warm hug. *Roll credits*

They're back, they still look daggy, and they fucking rock your socks off.

Zeitgeist, by the Smashing Pumpkins is released in Australia on July 14th, 2007.
Go get it, its the best album you haven't listened to yet.

The Final Steps

I'm at the final step... or so I hope! Thinking back to when the modding began a few weeks ago, things have progressed. The rear pillion pegs were removed and an exhaust hanger was fitted, the rearsets were bought and fitted, my rear cowl arrived yesterday and today I got an influx of gear - new oggy knobs and a wicked red radiator guard! Can't wait to fit them up, if I have time tomorrow I'll take some photos and blog 'em.

So yeh, that's it, the R1 is complete! I'm sure I'll end up finding some more bling for it down the line, but I think it really does have all it needs...

Mods list:
  • CRG brake and clutch lever
  • tinted screen
  • Oggy Knobs
  • Harri's R1 hand grips and tank pad
  • TechG race rearsets
  • Yamaha rear seat cowl
  • K&N air filter
  • Dynojet Power Commander III (USB)
  • Warp Speed radiator guard
  • fender eliminator
  • carbon fibre mudguard and rear hugger

Ah eBay, you've done it again!

Well, about 3 months ago I started seriously thinking about getting rearsets for the R1. I looked at all the big brands, all the cheap brands, and generally got confused about it all. Realistically speaking, the R1 is not a race bike, nor was it intended to be. It is a road bike that I wanted to bling up a little more, so the next step was rearsets, black, shiny, adjustable. On Friday, eBay delivered me some TechG R1 rearsets for $360.48 to my door. Mintox.

I managed to get Robin and Nath to help me out with installing them yesterday (I have no idea how to install this kinda stuff - being a Mechanical Engineer and all *sigh*). For about $375 (with a bottle of brake fluid) I had a new peg system. They feel great, although I'm getting my jeans caught on the connector for the gear selector lever... must look into that.

Hmm, weather seems okay today... a ride perhaps?
